Did You Know?: Bad Dr. Reviews
In our new “Did You Know?” series, our Patient Pathways team of navigation experts have put together a list of quick, important things we want you to know! Here’s an important one.
Did you know that low doctor ratings should always be taken with a grain of salt?
Understanding Doctor Ratings in British Columbia: Read Between the Lines
Just like any online review system, sites such as RateMDs.com can reflect frustration about wait times, personal expectations, or misunderstandings rather than the true quality of medical care. In British Columbia, where family doctors are often in short supply, it’s not unusual to see mixed reviews about clinics or physicians who are actually providing high-quality care.
Some of the best doctors have long waiting lists or run behind schedule because they take the time to truly focus on each patient. While you may be waiting alone in an exam room, your physician is often reviewing your medical history, lab results, or consultation notes before stepping in to meet you. Also, keep in mind — appointment lengths are set by need, not by the doctor, and every visit must fit within the appropriate time slot.
Helpful Hints When Reading Doctor Reviews
Look for patterns, not one-off complaints. One negative review among many positives usually isn’t representative.
Long waits but great care? That’s often a good sign. Pack your patience and a good book.
Great doctor, poor front desk? Administrative or office issues rarely reflect the skill of the doctor.
Knowledgeable but brusque? If empathy and warmth are priorities for you, ask your referring provider for another recommendation.
Consistently poor reviews? In those cases, it might be best to request a different doctor or clinic.
Go One Step Further: Verify Through Trusted BC Resources
Before making your final decision, check the physician’s professional record through the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC (CPSBC). This official resource lists a doctor’s credentials, disciplinary history, and registration status — giving you a quick and reliable way to confirm credibility and ensure peace of mind.
